When should I start HypnoBirthing classes?

Most parents start anytime between 20-35 weeks however the earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to practice and apply the techniques learnt – allowing you to feel more prepared and relaxed on your birthing day.

Many facets of HypnoBirthing are also extremely useful in the months leading up to labour, that’s why I recommended commencing your course anytime from 20 weeks.

What do I get from attending HypnoBirthing Classes?

  • A rich, detailed and positive prenatal education

  • The HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method guidebook and textbook.

  • MP3 recordings designed to promote relaxation, The Rainbow Relaxation, alongside additional affirmation techniques

  • Course handouts that underpin the weekly classes

  • Support and understanding as you develop a beautiful connection with your birth companion and baby

  • Trust, guidance and ongoing support throughout your pregnancy, birth and post-birth debrief

Who do I bring to class?

You’ll need to bring your birthing companion along to the classes (ie partner, sister, mother, doula or whoever will support your wishes towards a positive birthing journey). There is no extra cost for your Birth Companion.

How is the Birth Companion involved?

Through course learning, birth companions feel informed and can advocate for their choices – ensuring they choose care providers that best support them to reach their birth goals. Birth companions are also taught to support mum in practical ways that strengthen their partnership, producing a birth experience that they will both treasure forever.

Some of the practical skills your birth companion will learn include:

  • How to support you during labour with a toolbox full of techniques

  • How to guide you through birth by voice and touch

  • How to advocate to ensure your birth is not lead down a road of unnecessary medical interventions

  • How to help you stay focused and grounded throughout the process

  • How to enhance the connection and bond between mum and baby

How does HypnoBirthing affect babies?

HypnoBirthing will support you to feel connected to your baby with pre-birth parenting. Relaxation techniques aim to keep Mothers in a positive, elevated mood, which in turn imprints on the baby as it grows and is developing. This has a lasting effect on your baby, helping it to remain calm, more content and well adjusted to life post-birth.

Can HypnoBirthing benefit someone with special circumstances, or required to have a caesarean birth?

Every birth is a different experience. The beauty of HypnoBirthing is that it helps you approach your labour feeling informed and prepared for whatever turn your birthing story takes – whether that be induction, intervention or caesarean birth.

HypnoBirthing provides you with the tools to:

  • Release fear and anxiety surrounding your birth

  • Remain calm and comfortable through effective relaxation techniques

  • Prepare for your birth partners role in actively supporting you and your baby

  • Outline your birth preferences, even for an elective or emergency caesarean

  • Develop a specific plan for pre and post-surgery

  • Gain control over your birth experience, making the right choices for yourself and your baby

How does HypnoBirthing differ from other Childbirth Preparation Methods?

Some other childbirth preparation classes (ie. hospital classes) may focus more on the medical side of birth and active management of birth.

HypnoBirthing focuses on achieving a calm, gentle and positive birth experience. It’s about building confidence, rather than fear – giving you the knowledge, confidence and tools needed for a relaxed, natural birth. It’s about empowering and educating yourself to understand what your body can truly do. Because even if your birth takes a turn, you can be prepared and able to meet those turns with grace.

As fear is one of the leading causes of a traumatic birth, HypnoBirthing mothers approach labour feeling more confident and free of the fear that causes pain, which can lead many parents to accept unnecessary intervention that can lead to disappointing outcomes.

Is it true that I will experience a pain-free birth with HypnoBirthing?

Anyone looking to HypnoBirthing cannot be promised a pain-free birth. What can be promised is a toolbox of effective techniques and detailed knowledge, enabling you to be informed and to advocate for your birth choices, giving you the best chance at your most positive birth experience.

Using hypnobirthing techniques can help the birth of your baby be a more gentle and relaxed experience. This stress-free environment is likely to reduce the need for interventions or pain relief during your birth, allowing you to feel present and in control even when things become challenging.

HypnoBirthing will teach you how to release all prior emotions that lead to fear, resistance or pain. When giving birth with HypnoBirthing techniques, a mother is not in a trance or asleep but instead in a state of deep relaxation — awake, aware, and entirely in control.

Couples are also taught to be prepared for whatever turn their birthing takes, as the techniques learnt and practised will help promote a calmer and more comfortable experience.

By removing the fear of the unknown by understanding the physiology of birth, and building a united front; you’ll feel confident and empowered to use your techniques effectively – paving the way for a relaxed, focused and instinctive birth.

What if my Doctor/Midwife is not familiar with the HypnoBirthing Method? Can I still use this method? How can my birth professionals support me to achieve my HypnoBirthing goals?

More and more care providers are becoming increasingly familiar with the benefits of HypnoBirthing. In fact, many obstetricians and midwives recommend that expectant mothers undertake a HypnoBirthing course – as they see the firsthand value that the education and preparation provides.

However, if your doctor isn't informed on HypnoBirthing, you can take the opportunity early in your pregnancy to discuss the techniques you will use and the type of calm birthing environment you desire.

In class, you'll also learn how to create a specific birth plan, helping you effectively communicate your birthing goals and preferences to your birth professionals.
